“It is not enough to place colors, however beautiful, one beside the other; colors must also react on one another. Otherwise, you have cacophony.”

< Britannica >

Henri Matisse often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century. The leader of the Fauvist movement around 1900, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of colour throughout his career. His subjects were largely domestic or figurative, and a distinct Mediterranean verve presides in the treatment.

  • The Soul of the Rose (1908)
  • Echo and Narcissus (1903)
  • Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses (1891)
  • Circe Invidiosa (1892)

"Matisse’s art,“ applying the complementary colors and using bold primary colors is re-interpreted in various fields, and it already has been familiar to many people now. I tried to re-interpret Matisse’s art through the hair and make-up that are inspired by his collage.

inspired by ‘complementary contrast’

Henri Matisse called the Wizard of color has left numerous artworks that are through advanced simplification and appropriate use of complementary colors. After Matisse became sick in his later years , he was not able to sit and draw on the canvas any longer. He began to draw a picture painting with gouache paint on paper and cutting with scissors.
Matisse constructed his artworks as like sculpturing when it seemed colors and shapes reacting each other. So, it was supposed to be the work of the beautiful colors that are born structurally well constructed. . “les abeilles" is a work of art which is well expressed these features. As I reminded one of his quotes that to learn how to take pureness and freshness when a child approaches things, I selected to re-interpret complementary colors and simplification for makeup from features of his work.

Apply a ‘KOD7’ Rule
For structural representation, I cut rubber in square and stamped it on eyelids and ear face line for flows. After I created a muted color with mixing white and orange lightly, the face is directed as flat surface. It was given a point with Matisse blue, orange, and yellow color rather than use variety of colors. It is called ‘WARM & COOL’ law of KOD7; as with the colors used in the makeup, the use of opposite nature colors is visually expressed as to get attention. Through this work of make-up art, it was attempted to highlight the complementary contrast which is the feature of Matisse’s work of art.
